This volume comprises a selection of papers presented at the Inaugural Conference of the Institute for Social and Economic Studies (IESE) held on September 19, 2007, in Maputo. These papers were drawn from the panel on “Southern Africa. “The Conference, themed “Challenges for social and economic research in Mozambique,” and its panels covered a wide array of topics, dependent on the submitted papers. Consequently, the current selection of papers does not uniformly address a common issue or follow a consistent approach, and there is no specific hierarchy in the sequence of articles within this collection. It’s important to note that not all the articles are focused on Mozambique, and those that do discuss Mozambique exclusively may have broader relevance. However, all of them contribute significantly to the ongoing development discourse in Mozambique.
Among the six articles included, four share a common theme, delving into the impact of economic accumulation patterns and the dynamics of social and political transformation in South Africa. These factors play a pivotal role in shaping regional relations, presenting challenges, opportunities, and influencing patterns of regional development. The remaining two articles shift their focus to different issues. One examines the roles played by India and China, while the other addresses the challenges arising from negotiations with the European Union concerning Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs).
